It’s April now and the winds off the Gulf are warm and welcomed. I love the rituals of the changeover from winter to spring. Yesterday, all the flannels and sweaters were washed and put away until the winter chills blow again. The blanket from the bed is washed and tucked away in the linen closet. Plants that wintered indoors are now gaily waving in the breeze outside. They seem as joyful as I feel.
Spring heralds the time to open up the house. Blinds go up and windows are opened to wash away the mustiness of winter. Once again, you can hear the plantive lowing of the cows as they meander through a pasture just over the hill. The blinds’straps flap back and forth clinkling their plastic sound as they hit the window sill. The grass is mowed and although there are chores left to do, they will wait until tomorrow. Today is for lazing away the hours reading or writing or maybe talking with a friend. It is a day to just be.
Early spring was marred by days of cold and damp; now, you know that even though it may chill a few more days here and there, we are in for steady times of warmth and growth. Time is fleeting and these heady days will march forward straight into summer when the heat will be unrelenting. But for now, this is God’s gift to us a rare perfect day to enjoy.
